Andrade Nunes is an investor in a number of companies, he has an MSc in management from the London School of Economics and is a corporate lawyer by trade, however, he is not your typical legal eagle. Pedro’s entire life has been a transgression between two very different realties each evolving deeply around his art. ‘I started drawing and painting at the age of seven and have been continuously developing my skills ever since. Perhaps I belong to the so-called group of ‘outsider artists’ as I have not had any formal artistic education. ‘I create my work in a spontaneous way, without awareness of other things being produced elsewhere or at any point in time. First and foremost, I paint for myself, I could not live without it, painting to me is as natural and as necessary as breathing’
‘I would say it might be as a walk in the park would be to someone who cannot see… they have to sense what the eyes alone cannot perceive’. When you start a painting what goes through your mind, what preparations if any do you make? ‘I’m a blank canvas, like what lays beneath me. I honestly have nothing in my mind and no preparations are ever made. Painting (for me) has to be an irrational movement forward. A jump into the unknown, so instead of a critical process of painting, I prefer a critical process of living. If you could be anything or anybody, who or what or both would it be? Nobody else other than myself.’ If you could share a bottle of wine with someone dead or alive, who would it be and why? ‘I would drink it with my father- I miss him deeply. My paintings should be a perpetual motion, living is an act of faith. The past should be a lesson for the present, and a preparation for the future’ Revisions? Sure, but only moving forward. Embracing the uniqueness of humanity is the ultimate challenge and with such unique individuality, mistakes arrive. Take them as yours to grow. Pedro’s style of painting doesn’t start with an idea or a concept, he simple paints straight onto the canvas. On his floor, in bare feet with a cigarette and glass of wine. He is usually in a semi-conscious state, he does not do any drafts and does not work around a subject, his instincts take control in such a way that he is no longer the master of the brush. Born in Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, his early childhood years spent in Africa, it was there that his love of travel was formed. He has painted from an instinct, nothing specifically defined, an urge, an impulse, something irrational for sure. His works are world renowned and will be later seen in Christie’s in January 2020 and the National Portrait Gallery, London in 2020.
She has a certain hidden beauty only perceived by looking behind her skin; he has an amount of pain only perceived by her. In this piece a true connection is made and the colours blend between them in an extreme empathy. They shall be one.
